Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2010 This present thesis aims at dealing with investigating possible meanings of the English verb come and the Vietnamese verb về from cognitive perspective. The study starts with the literature review with two main parts. First, definitions of cognitive linguistics, cognitive semantics, Talmy’s theory about lexicalization patterns and image schema are presented as the background for the research. Secondly, deictic motion verbs in English and Vietnamese are stated with aim to defining which groups come and về belong to. Syntactic and semantics features of come and về as well as image schema are also mentioned. Based on Talmy’s theory, the conflations of semantic components are investigated to compare possible meanings of these two verbs. Moreover, the corpus-based study is conducted to answer the hypotheses. The corpus in this study is over 50,000 words per language which are taken from some prewar literary works written by famous writers. Using Oxford WordSmith Tools 5.0 and Wordlist Expert 2.0.1, the occurrence frequency and concordances of come and về are examined. The results show that the English verb come is used less frequently than the Vietnamese verb về and the meanings of come is either equivalent or non-equivalent to the meanings of về. Therefore, the data do not support both the hypotheses. These initial findings of the analysis may lead to implications for language teaching, translation as well as some suggestions for further research Electronic Resources |
