Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2011 As globalization brings the world closer together, the field of English language teaching is always expanding. Throughout the world individuals of all ages are entering English classrooms to learn what has become the most widely spoken language in the world. English language teaching can be fun and rewarding with the right materials. With the wealth of resources available to teachers in print and on the Internet, it is increasingly important to evaluate the materials with a critical eye, and select those that best suit the individual classroom needs. In this thesis we will consider different opinion on the analysis of materials as textbook, in order to find out the best way to teach English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for our students. We will consider the case for a standardised approach to materials evaluation. ESP is known as a learner-centered approach to teaching English as a foreign or second language. It meets the needs of (mostly) adult learners who need to learn a foreign language for use in their specific fields, such as science, technology, medicine, leisure, and academic learning. In an effort to offer the students with materials according to their specific needs we find it necessary to implement an evaluation of the textbook “English For Engineering” (EFE) which has been used as the core materials for the technical students. The material is said to be most updated and to some extent is thought to be good for students at Hanoi Industrial Vocational College (HNIVC). However, the material is applied to students for a long time at least 5 years ago without any formal evaluation. For this reason, we will look at the purposes and criteria on public evaluations of teaching materials. Finally, we will begin to discuss the evaluation of materials in use. Textbook evaluation with its pedagogical implications may ensure a more effective language program. It takes into consideration the language, the needs and the lacks of targeted students in order to suggest changes for improvements of the material to meet the demand of students at HNIVC Electronic Resources |
