Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2012 Communicative language teaching and learner-centered approach have influenced English language teaching worldwide, and Vietnam is no exception to this trend. This innovative trend makes educators pay more attention to individual learners (their heredity, experiences, perspectives, backgrounds, talents, interests, learning styles, capacities, and needs) with focus on learning. Meanwhile some of these factors, especially learning styles, vary and teachers are not aware of their students’ learning styles preferences. That the teachers cannot meet students’ need, as a result, negatively affects teaching and learning attitude, the atmosphere and the outcome. In an attempt to find out the students’ learning styles preferences and check out teachers’ awareness about their students’ learning styles preferences at Hanoi University of Business and Technology, I conduct the study. The study’s aims is processed with focus on some criteria such as students’ interested styles in perceiving information in real life, students’ styles in learning English, the way of learning, preferences of learning modes, teaching aids, class activities, error correction and teaching methodology. In order to collect the data, 227 students from 10 classes randomly selected and 10 teachers teaching in these classes are invited to participate in the study. Students’ and teachers’ answers for the 20-item questionnaire are classified, presented in table/graphs, analyzed and discussed comprehensively. The result reveals that students preferred Visual/nonverbal style; they enjoyed perceiving information by seeing and participating in games/conversation, studying in small groups, learning new words by writing them down several times, learning English from Televisions/videos and pictures, talking to, listening to other students. Furthermore, teachers were aware of students’ language learning style preferences in some aspects; however, they were not fully aware of the others. In addition, there was an association between language learning style, age and gender. The finding of the study is believed to be a useful and reliable source of reference for not only teachers and students at target university but also those who are under the similar context of language teaching and learning in Vietnam. The study is hoped to be the springboard for further studies on the same topic Electronic Resources |
