Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2012 This study investigated the difficulties encountered by lower and upper-intermediate students during the IELTS speaking preparation course at EQuest. The aims of the study were to find out types of difficulties two groups of students met in class, the extent to which they shared similar types with a view to proposing feasible appropriate solutions to Giúp them surmount and offer them a better preparation and more chance to achieve their target in the real IELTS speaking sub-test. The researcher employed narrative frame and semi-structured interviews to collect data among 2 nine-student-classes of 2 levels of lower and upper intermediate (IELTS A and IELTS B respectively) relevant to answer 3 research questions, and a phenomenological approach termed ‘interactive synthesis (Huberman & Miles 1994) to organize and analyze the data gathered. The findings revealed that almost all of the students in the 2 classes faced a huge number of difficulties in both Accuracy and Fluency of speaking in which the former remained knottier. Also such components of Accuracy as word and sentence stress and vocabulary appeared to be problematic to both 2 groups of students. Lower-intermediate students were reported to outnumber those at upper level in almost all aspects surveyed except for the difficulties in linking sounds, using complex sentence structures, having enough vocabulary items especially less common lexis and keeping going and moving on by using communication strategies when speaking. The study ended with a number of recommendations for helping the students overcome the difficulties for even better teaching and learning of IELTS Speaking skill at EQuest Electronic Resources |
