Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2011 In an attempt to investigate the dificulties in learning English vocabulary of ethnic minority grade 10 students at Muong Bi high school in remote and mountainous Hoa Binh province, the main purposes of the research were to find out: (1) students’ attitude toward English vocabulary learning; (2) teachers’ techniques and strategies in teaching vocabulary; (3) teaching materials; and (4) main difficulties in learning English vocabulary at school. The subjects of the study were 100 students , all of them answered the questionnaires. And 10 English lessons were observed. The research finds out that due to the lack of background knowledge ethnic minority students at the school face too many difficulties in acquiring the language. The difficulties are also caused by the material and the teachers’ method of teaching. Finally, in order to improve English vocablary learning in a high remote and mountainous school, the study recommends the followings: teachers should vary their teaching techniques and activities; textbooks should be adapted; extra practice activities for language learning should be organized; learning and teaching conditions should be improved; and local teachers should be available to teach English for students in their communities Electronic Resources |
