Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2011 This study aims at modifying listening tasks in English 11 to improve students’ listening comprehension. Form of an action research is exploited to carry out the study. The subjects involved in the study are 50 students from class 11I of Kinh Mon High School. Tests, class observations, questionnaires, teaching diaries and textbook analysis are the instruments used to collect data during eight weeks of the study. The results from initial data reveal that the unsuitability of the listening tasks in the textbook is one of the causes which made students uninterested in listening lessons, and then their listening comprehension is not enhanced. To better the situation, an action plan about modifying the original listening tasks is prepared and implemented in three listening lessons within three weeks. The modification of the original listening tasks is based on students’ real needs and follows the principles and techniques for adapting materials. Specifically, the techniques used are replacing, changing and omitting inappropriate tasks. The results from data analysis in the action stage confirm that the modified listening tasks Giúp students improve their listening comprehension a lot. With modified tasks, students are more concentrated in the tasks and most of them can complete the tasks quite well. Based on the findings of the research, some discussions, recommendations, limitations and suggestions are given out. It is hope that the findings, recommendations as well as suggestions will be helpful for EFL teachers when using the new sets of English textbook in general and English 11 in particular so as for them to improve their students’ listening comprehension Electronic Resources |
