Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2013 This study has been conducted to explore the teaching and learning of TOEIC listening skill at Hanoi Law University. The subjects of the study are 50 students and 14 English lecturers at Hanoi Law University. The data have been collected via questionnaires. The findings exhibit that both teachers and students encounter difficulties in dealing with TOEIC listening. Teachers’ difficulties are categorized into different stages of a listening lesson, namely pre-listening, while-listening and post-listening. The findings indicate that the biggest difficulties for teachers are motivating learners to listen, designing various listening tasks, and having time for post-listening activities. Students’ difficulties are attributed to Listener factor, Speaker factor and Material/medium factor. The most common difficulties include the listeners’ limited linguistic knowledge, the speaker’s fast speed and the material’s specialized content. In addition, specific difficulties that students encounter in each part of the TOEIC listening test are identified as well. Based on the findings, the researcher proposes some recommendations for teachers and students to overcome the problems. Electronic Resources |
