Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2013 This study was conducted at High School for Gifted Students with a view to exploring reading strategy use of non English major students as well as identifying differences (if possible) in reading strategy use among high proficiency group and low proficiency group. One hundred twenty Grade 10 students participated in this study. Survey of Reading Strategy (SORS) was used to measure the students’ general reading strategy use. Strategies were classified into 3 categories: global, problem-solving, and support. Reading strategies employed by twenty students from high proficiency group and twenty students from low proficiency group were also compared to see whether any differences existed. The results indicated that students at HSGS reported using reading strategies with moderate frequency when they read school – related academic materials in English and they used Problem Solving strategies more frequently than Global and Support strategies. In addition, the study also revealed some differences in reading strategy use among students of different proficiency level. While high proficiency group used sophisticated reading strategies like Global Strategies, low proficiency group seldom used such strategies but used simple Problem-solving strategies. However, when looking at five most frequently used strategies and five least frequently used strategies, the researcher found out some shared strategies between two groups. From the findings, the study also suggested pedagogical implications, acknowledge limitations of the study and offered suggestions for further research Electronic Resources |
