Miêu tả: | 50 p. + CD-ROM M.A Thesis English Teaching Methodology -- University of Foreign Languages and International studies. Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2012 Colloquial speech seems to be one of the most difficult areas for achieving native-like language competence in the acquisition of a foreign language, so very few studies have been conducted on this topic. In fact, acquiring the colloquial speech of a discourse community is crucial for foreign language learners who wish to achieve native-like proficiency in the target language of such community. Therefore, this study aims at examining to what degree English major students at Foreign Language Faculty (FLF) – Thai Nguyen University comprehend and acquire this type of speech in their speaking classes. The research was carried out with the popular Likert-typed questionnaire for FLF students and semi-interviews with FLF teachers. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were exploited to analyze the collected data. Three main findings on FLF English major students’ frequency and competence of using colloquial English speech features together with the factors influencing the students’ competence were explored in the research. Finally, the implications of this approach for FLF students’ learning were discussed. Hopefully, this study will lead to subsequent changes in the traditional teaching method of Vietnamese teachers in general and FLF teachers in particular to make the English lessons more effective and native-like, hence students can use English in real life communications naturally Electronic Resources Electronic Resources |
