Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2011 In learning English for General Purposes (EGP) in general and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in particular, vocabulary plays an important role. Without vocabulary, very limited communication can occur because words carry the intended message. However, learning vocabulary is really the greatest challenge in learning a foreign language because vocabulary learning involves a number of cognitive processes and it is affected by a number of factors. The aims of this study are to identify the factors affecting students’ learning of ESP vocabulary at State Commercial No5 School and suggest possible solutions to helping students study ESP vocabulary more effectively. The study was undertaken with 100 students of Accounting at State Commercial No5 School. On the basic of analysis of the data, the findings show that the major factors affecting students’ learning of accounting vocabulary: the intralexical factors of accounting vocabulary, students’ vocabulary learning strategies, and teaching methodology. Some solutions are suggested to deal with these factors including training students to become self-studiers, guiding students with different vocabulary learning strategies, improving teachers’ techniques and professional knowledge in teaching vocabulary.
