Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2011 Vocabulary has been regarded as a fundamental element of learning English. However, for the most of Vietnamese students in general and the learners at HMC in particular, vocabulary seems to be the most difficult problem in language learning. This study is to examine the effects of theme based short readings on HMC students at elementary level. After a six – week experiment, the data was collected from multiple sources, including pre – tests, post-tests and attitude questionnaires. Then the data was computed and analyzed by means of descriptive analysis and Paired Samples T-tests with SPSS 17.0. The results of the study reveal that learners have gained some progress in their vocabulary learning and their positive attitudes towards reading in English have been significantly improved. The findings have also shown that theme based short readings can be used widely in English language learning in HMC. Through the experience of implementing this research, some discussions and recommendations of teaching and learning vocabulary have been given to HMC teachers and learners.
