They are not only considered as a resource of useful and interesting information but a motivation for learners to study and acquire their language as well (Dudley-Evans & St John, 1998; Nonaka, 2001). Therefore, developing suitable materials for learners is a necessity in English language teaching. This study is conducted with a view to designing a supplementary reading syllabus for the first-year English major students at HPU so as to meet the needs of both teachers and students. In order to analyze their needs, questionnaire is chosen as the main instrument. The study drew the participation of 35 English majors and all the 5 teachers responsible for teaching reading skill. The result of the study is regarded as the basis for choosing the appropriate syllabus for the learners. The proposed supplementary reading syllabus is expected to give both teachers and students a valuable resource, at the same time, to improve the English teaching and learning at HPU Electronic Resources |
