Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2011 The purpose of this thesis is to design an ESP reading syllabus for the second-year students of business administration at the Waterway Transport Vocational College Number 1. It is hoped that the syllabus will benefit the students, teachers in teaching and learning process at the Waterway Transport Vocational College Number 1. The study consists of three main parts: Introduction, Development and Conclusion. The Introduction gives the rationale, aims and objectives, research questions, scopes, methods and the design of the study. The Development which is the main part of the study consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the theoretical background concerning areas of ESP, syllabus design, needs analysis and reading theories. In chapter 2, the teaching and learning situation at the WTVC Number 1 is presented to show that it is a must to design a reading syllabus for the second-year students of Business Administration at WTVC Number 1. Then, the study focuses on needs analysis conducted to the ESP teachers, the subject teachers, the second-year students of business administration and the ex-students by means of questionnaires and interviews. Based on the results of the needs analysis, an ESP reading syllabus is proposed in chapter 3. The Conclusion summarizes the study, points out its limitations and provides several suggestions for further research.
