Since course books do not usually provide with all the requirements, teachers need to look for supplementary materials to reach the learning goal. Thus, the aims of this study is to investigate the necessity of designing supplementary speaking activities, and find out how to adapt them and then suggest some suitable ones for the course book “Lifelines Elementary” so as to Giúp the 1st year students at VVC TCA have more chances to improve their speaking activity. Based on the data from the questionnaires and personal observations, the author found out that some interesting types of speaking activities such as role – play, information – gap, conversation, interview, and games can be designed to facilitate speaking lessons and enable students to speak naturally and frequently.
