Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2011 The main purpose of this study is to discover the problems faced by the teachers and students in teaching and learning pronunciation at a high school for Ethnic Minorities at Forestry University of Vietnam. The writer also suggested some feasible solutions that can Giúp the English teachers overcome those problems and improve their students’ pronunciation. In order to reach these goals, the study was accomplished in qualitative and quantitative methods conducted in a class of 50 ethnic minority students at 11th grade and 10 teachers of English in VFU. The data were collected from questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations. The results of the study indicated that both teachers and students at EMsHS in VFU did not pay much attention on teaching and learning pronunciation, they spent very little time on it (less than 20 minutes per week). Besides, most of the EMS learn Vietnamese as the first language and English as the second language, so no matter how much their English pronunciation affected by their mother tongues, it is mainly influenced by the first language in the learning process. Those findings also attribute to the suggested solutions to the problems encountered by teachers and students at high school in VFU in their teaching and learning English pronunciation. It is truly hoped that this thesis will be useful for teachers at the school to improve their students’ pronunciation Electronic Resources |
