Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2012 The study investigates the teachers’ attitudes towards the textbook and the ways they exploit it at Vinh Tuong high school in Vinh Phuc province. Classroom obsevations were carried out first to investigate how the teachers exploited textbooks. A structured interview was employed to elicit the perspectives of five English teachers about the textbook in general and the reasons for their exploitaion of textbooks. The findings show that the teachers are aware of both the advantages and disadvantages of textbooks. All of them consider textbook as a framework in teaching and learning and believe that it is dangerous if they depend on them too much. It is evident that the teachers all make some adaptations to textbooks to suit their students’ ability. Besides, there are five main constraints affecting the teachers’ exploitation, namely examinations, teachers’ personal confidence, students’ level of proficiency, teaching schedule, and time pressure.
