Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2012 The study investigates the impacts of teachers’ beliefs about communicative language teaching (CLT) on their teaching performance and the factors that affect teachers' beliefs. The target population of this study was 24 teachers in English Department at HUBT. To explore the teachers’ beliefs, a modified questionnaire of Choi (1999) about teachers’ beliefs about CLT, was used for data collection. The questionnaires, consisting of a total of 20 items, were sent to 24 teachers of English at HUBT. The data of 24 valid responses were collected and analyzed. The findings of the study indicated that teachers at HUBT had positive beliefs and support the concepts of communicative language teaching. However, when implementing CLT in a particular context, it raises up a lot of problems because of being familiar to traditional methods, lack of facilities, students’ low level of English, and not enough teachers training. In addition, referring to the factors that affect these teachers' beliefs, the external factors play more important role than internal factors. Students - related factors and the teaching environment seem to influence teachers' beliefs most when teaching with communicative method. On the base of the findings, some suggestions and implications to increase the development of teaching methods in Vietnamese English education were recommended Electronic Resources |
