Speaking in a second or foreign language has often been viewed as the most demanding of the four skills and seen as the central skill. This study aimed at finding out the applications of pictures and factors that may affect the effectiveness of pictures’ use. Realizing it, the writer was interested in investigating the teachers and students of English as a foreign language in an English center. This study used qualitative methods that the data were collected through questionnaire, class observations, and lesson plan analysis. The population of the study was 68 students of 14 to 30 years old and 20 teachers from one year to five years’ experience, who were taken by using proportional random sampling. The result of this study showed that pictures do have facilitative effect on students’ learning of English speaking skill. Pictures are excellent at representing new vocabulary and grammar items, supplying background knowledge, and introducing new themes and popular with other uses. It means that, pictures are mostly involved in input knowledge that the students need for their response and Giúp contribute to the development of vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension – three out of five important components of English speaking skill. On the other hand, the study drew out factors that may hinder the process of pictorial exploitations. On top of this, the relation between picture and its text content, including whether long or short text are used, and their co-existence on the same page of the paper or slideshow will be of great support to speaking lessons in teaching new vocabulary and leading students to new topics Electronic Resources |
