Abstract
Listening comprehension is a difficult skill for foreign language learners to develop and for their teachers to teach. It is admitted that pre-listening stage is of great Giúp in reducing difficulties for the learners. This study investigated the effects of pre-listening activities on the listening performances of grade 10 students at Nguyen Gia Thieu high school. The research involved the participation of 100 students and ten teachers answering the survey questionnaire. Besides, the researcher conducted class observations in three classes to support the findings. The results showed the current situation of teaching and learning pre- listening stage at Nguyen Gia Thieu high school, the students' preferences for pre- listening activities and the teachers and the students' comments on the pre-listening activities available in the textbook. Basing on those findings, some recommendations for implementing pre-listening activities were provided. They were improving the pre- listening activities in the material and using pre-listening activities appropriately and flexibly. The findings are generally consistent with the results of the small number of previous studies in this area but there is certainly scope for further investigation.
